Not something I'd say often, but I actually agree with Ann Coulter on this one point: http://i100.independent.co.uk/article/ann-coulter-refused-to-hug-an-undocumented-mexican-immigrant-yes-really--lkgCVtessWZ . Being shamed/forced/peer-pressured into hugging anyone (on tv or in any other public situation) is so not cool.

Of course, the rest of the interview is so yuck that I feel I need to scrub my brain after even reading it.

Between not even having any of my fics snatched in the AO3 thing and the first review in months for the Dark AU at MPTT being spam, I don't know whether to laugh or to sulk...

Dear cat,

I understand that hairballs just happen, really, I do; but did you have to put it in the middle of my bed?

I must say it's a relief to know this wool won't suck me into a sudden wormhole or something...

and yes, I do know it's just a bad translation...

Freudian typos, part x of many: typing 'Elk-King' for 'Elf-King' to refer to Thranduil in a Hobbit-movieverse fic

I'd already been humming a certain Tom Lehrer song for days while rereading Poul Anderson's Operation Chaos, but I totally lost it just now, on a line near the end: "And this is how it happened that, although Bolyai led our expedition, Lobachevsky published first."

There's some maintenance work being done on the building - this is how the scaffolding was parked every night this week... *sigh* )

In other news, after thirty-odd years the bench/table thing on my balcony has probably reached the end of its useful life, unless I develop a sudden interest in watching wood decay. Mushroom! )

Research

Funny and frustrating: when researching ancient and medieval catapults and such half the links on the first few pages are to do with Age of Empires; and most of the others are 'build your own desktop mini trebuchet/mangonel/ballista/onager', which, while probably fun, isn't quite what I was looking for either...

Of course, when I turned round to my bookcase, I realised I have much of the answer sitting right there.

Really, spoolchuck?
(technically contains a spoiler for the Dark AU beyond ch. 30, but can be enjoyed without any knowledge of the story)

Headline in the online Guardian: "Horsemeat firm chief to be grilled"

My thoughts:
- As long as they actually label him as Soylent Green/long pig, fine...
- I'm not eating that...

When I tidied my desk this morning, I found this note. After staring at it blankly for a while, trying to remember which fic it was for, it dawned on me that it was from working at home last Monday, and thus concerned the lay-out of a text rather than a plot point...

This weekend I went to see an exhibition in a car museum, only to find these. I will happily ignore what it says on the sign; as far as I'm concerned, yes, the internal combustion engine did reach Aman, and this is what the Teleri are driving (or rather, they were until Fëanor took them for a joyride...)

Bert may have epilepsy - she had her second seizure in two days this morning. Could be because of an infection she has at the moment, but it could also be the real thing.

I'm without my regular email at the moment, since my provider has shut down its mail servers after being hacked and having a list of customers' details published. Epic fail is epic (and still more emerging - seems they had stored unencrypted passwords). On the plus side, my details aren't on the list (it's on pastebin, of course I had a look). On the down side, no idea how long it's going to take (hopefully no more than a few days).

The cold spell is about to come to an end after the weekend, at least for a few days - hopefully without too much slippery roads and stuff.

Work is the busiest period of the year. Another month or two to go before things become sane again.

Here's the second story in the Mushroom Tales sequence; I'm sure everyone will recognise the setting (and yes, this crossover is worthy of further investigation...). Part I, the Tale of Grûgishl the Orc-Maid, can be read here.
