One very nice thing about waking up early is that this morning I've been sitting on the balcony for about half an hour already with a cup of coffee to watch the Perseids.

I saw eight, as well as two planes and a bunch of stars.

In other news: today I will undertake a quest to IKEA. I may not make it out again...

Morning, Star...

There were more Perseids out there this night...

In other news, the first layer of new paint on the loo tiles makes a world of difference already:-)

Meanwhile, Her Felinity knows the proper way to enjoy her weekend (and, one suspects, any other sunny day...)

They're out there.

I've seen'em.

I just sat on the balcony for a while. It's a beautiful clear night, the horizon is just starting to lighten a bit, but it's still dark enough to see the Milky Way and a lot of stars...

Sleepy? Oh yes, eventually; if I keel over during the day, I'll have a nap...

edit: for clarity, that was waking up early thanks to whiny cat, rather than not having slept

Testing the tripod...

The belt of Orion:

and most of those stars aren't visible to the naked eye, either... (at least not here in the city)

Hoping...

Apparently there's at least a chance of a clear sky for the lunar eclipse tonight. Right now it's pissing it down with rain...

This is how bright EärendilVenus was earlier tonight:

It'd have been a good picture with a tripod...

I woke up early this morning and when I opened the blinds there was a perfect starry sky (or at least as good as it gets in an urban area) out there; so I fed Her Felinity, made a cup of coffee and drank it on the balcony while watching the stars... once my eyes had adapted fully I could even make out the Milky Way:)

It would be really nice if the new computer gets here today, because I'd quite like to have next week, which I had already taken off (not because of the computer incidentally, but because I can), to set it up etc. It'll probably arrive next Friday... and I'll have time to think of a suitable name for it.

ETA after phonecall: new toy will arrive next eek, due to delayed parts... Ah well, it's not like I don't have plenty of other stuff to do as well...

Awake way too early this morning...

Utter coolness...

Unfortunately no good photos (unless I can postprocess one or two to show the bite Fenrir took out of the sun); I really need to get a filter for my digital camera, so that it will stop trying to compensate for the over-exposure by telling me I should use the flash...

From the universe that brought us the Eye of Sauron in Fomalhaut, now there is this:
That's no moon, that's a space station!

Comet fun: Stare at the viewer and wait for teh Boom. Not that it's going to be all that spectacular...

Er, perhaps we shouldn't investigate this star *too* closely?

Also, I am a lemming:
Take the MIT Weblog Survey

And another reason for a WTF icon: Bernie Ecclestone's comment that "Women should be all dressed in white like all other domestic appliances." Well, I always wanted to be a coffee machine, but I have a black one. Does that mean I can wear black?

Only 0.7 Celsius out there this morning... and a nice line-up of moon and planets.
