Not that I've been quiet exceptionally long or anything *LOL* but my internet conked out Thursday morning and I only got back online yesterday afternoon (new modem and an hour on the phone with my provider's helpdesk since it turned out the installation instructions were fairly spectacularly wrong).

Because faffing about online is fun... I just threw together a new Pinterest board, Castles and stuff. Most of these are the result of a recent bout of story research:-)

I guess my aesthetic is piles of (mossy) rocks *g*

So a bit back I took the jump and started a tumblr - mostly Avengers*-related for now; I'll see what I end up doing with it. I still don't know how it all works, but hey *shrug*

*Okay, mostly waxing sentimental about Bucky and Steve, for those wanting to nitpick...

I've been looking at Wordpress designs, and now I'm left with the urge to do something, ANYthing to my site and LJ, which suddenly look hopeless, while at the same time not liking anything I've seen enough to go for that theme or something close to it.

Also, I know that, as aesthetically pleasing the designs I've seen are, I'd be bored with them fairly quickly.

The feeling will wear off again, but ARGH.

Argh. First I kept getting new ideas and changing this post on the fly, now the original link disappeared, so the link now goes to a pdf of the original post I linked to. Change all the things?

For anyone who thinks they're too productive at work or otherwise... I've made a variant of the 2048-game with Dúnedain Chieftains: try to get to Aragorn... Enjoy!

Thank you all for the Christmas cards:-)

For everybody on my flist who likes men with long hair...

So far, I've spent the holiday doing a lot of reading, getting started on watching all seven seasons of BtVS, failing to get started on watching the Potter movies, balconying, playing with various bits of 3D software, knitting, entertaining the cats, the occasional day out, writing, and working my way through all kinds of piles that had kind of piled up (the clothing repair/make stack for a start). Not terribly exciting, but very relaxing *g*

I spent today at the Wikimedia Netherlands conference (which technically was work-related); the various talks were quite interesting (most of them education-oriented in some way), especially the plenary talk by Jimmy Wales (much of which was on mobile internet in Africa, as well as a lot of stuff on Wikipedia). I had a bit of an internal giggle during the talk on Wikidata, where they showed the page for 'Earth' with all the data, and I couldn't help thinking that they should just have gone for 'mostly harmless'.

I'm without my regular email at the moment, since my provider has shut down its mail servers after being hacked and having a list of customers' details published. Epic fail is epic (and still more emerging - seems they had stored unencrypted passwords). On the plus side, my details aren't on the list (it's on pastebin, of course I had a look). On the down side, no idea how long it's going to take (hopefully no more than a few days).

The cold spell is about to come to an end after the weekend, at least for a few days - hopefully without too much slippery roads and stuff.

Work is the busiest period of the year. Another month or two to go before things become sane again.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Well, I'm back...

The engineer turned up today, did his thing and now all the right lights on my modem are on again. There will be photos of the chaos at some point in the (near) future.

Well, with no Dutch tv channel (or even Eurosport) showing the Indy 500, it's just as well I can watch the livestream online *g*

Looking at the grid, I must say that I still don't believe in Bertrand Baguette, though.

Well, it wasn't technically on the to-do list, at least not for this weekend, but I strayed across a way to archive my fic on my site without handcarving the html for it:-)

I did wonder several times this afternoon whether I wouldn't be better off sticking to plain html. It is embarrassing if you have to look this hard for the admin password for your site... Anyway: apart from HASA and some of the oldest stuff in the Pit of Voles, my fic will be living here as well: Nath's Stories.

I apologise for there being no actual content there as yet, or anything other than the standard eFiction boilerplate text. I do intend to change that, but I think I will go and do some actual writing now for a bit, rather than faffing about with administrative stuff.

I was using my lunchbreak to look for suitable background images for an 'In Soviet Russia, LJ reads you' icon, when I found this:

Not what I was looking for, but still *g*

I'd post photos tonight, but my intarwebs is so slow right now that I'm giving up for the time being. Maybe later. Or tomorrow.
